I don’t know about you, but when I imagine schools of the future, I see students learning by being active participants in making their communities better.

Currently, there are a small group of schools leading this change and a few of them can be found right here in Portland, Maine!

SchoolSquare is thrilled to be partnering with one of these schools, Casco Bay High School, to help them better connect their teachers and students with the caring adults of the Greater Portland community!

Casco Bay High School is an Expeditionary Learning School

So, what is an Expeditionary Learning School? An E.L. School and its curriculum are rooted in project-based learning expeditions, where students engage in collaborative, rigorous study of captivating topics. Students work in groups, frequently out in their community with assessment coming through cumulative products, public presentations, and portfolios.

As they put it- “When students and teachers are engaged in work that is challenging, adventurous and meaningful, learning and achievement flourish. Our mission is to create classrooms where teachers can fulfill their highest aspirations, and students achieve more than they think possible, becoming active contributors to building a better world.”

When the heart of a curriculum is based on community interaction that means teachers, staff and students’ parents do a great deal of outreach. The emails, phone calls, in-person meetings, and scheduling can add up and make time-strapped people even busier! Yikes! This is where SchoolSquare comes in! As CC Robinson, Casco Bay’s Senior Humanities teacher enthusiastically put it- “It sounds like you are developing a high leverage tool that could potentially be a difference maker in the survival of certain community-involvement heavy expeditions that are currently unsustainable for teachers.”

Yes, CC! We are developing a tool that aims to be a difference-maker for teachers like you and we can’t wait to help you engage, support, and inspire our community’s kids!
